How to Design & Make Your First Me-Made Garment

  • Course
  • Starts Monday

An 8-week course for beginners who've dabbled in sewing and are ready to make something that's genuinely and intentionally theirs.

You've sewn a few things. Now you want to make something that's actually yours.

Most sewing courses focus on teaching you to follow instructions. This one teaches you to make decisions - about design, fabric, fit, and construction - so you come out 8-weeks later with a garment unique to you, and made for you.

Is this for you?

You've made something before but it wasn't clothing and you're now excited to try.

Clothes in shops never fit you right and you're excited to do something about it.

You have your own ideas but don't know how to translate them into a real garment.

You want a process that takes you from you starting idea to a gorgeous finished make.

About your instructor

Hi, I'm Eve!

I'm a trained fashion designer, creative pattern cutter and online educator, and have spent ten years teaching women and men around the world how to design and make their own fashion via my blog The Creative Curator.

This course takes sewing beginners through what they should know before they start sewing clothes so that they skip the frustration and end up with something fabulous!

Taking this course will change how you sew!

I'll take away the worry of getting it wrong and throwing your project in the bin before the final stitch is sewn. I'll teach you...

1. How to choose a project

Designing and making your own clothes isn't about picking a pattern with a great cover image and sewing it up as is - it's about making a garment that suits your body, your skill level and your style.

2. How to Choose the Right Fabric

The way fabric drapes and feels, as well as its structure and weight will impact on the way a project will turn out. Understanding this is a big part of sewing successful garments.

3. How to Measure Accurately

Before cutting into any fabric, you need to understand the pattern you'll be using. This starts with taking body measurements that are accurate - and that means more than a bust, waist and hip measurement! You can then select a pattern size that accurately reflects your body for the best possible result.

4. How to plan your project

You've selected a starting pattern, chosen the fabric you want to use, and are ready to get started, but before you start sewing it's best to make a plan for your project!

Nobody wants to spend more time unpicking than they need to, which is why knowing the right order to construct a project - and the best finishing steps too - will save your project from the bin.

Design. Test. Make.

01.

First You Design It

A little reflection, a mood board and a quick sketch - and before you even pick up a pattern or choose your fabric.

You'll know exactly what you're making and why before any money is spent on materials.

02.

Then You Test It

Professionals do this for a reason. And beginners mostly avoid it.

We'll make a test version in cheap fabric so that by the time you cut your main fabric, your fit is sorted.

03.

You Make it For Real

A logical construction sequence. Pressing at every stage. And the fit confirmed before you cut.

Not just a finished garment — a process you'll use for every project after this one.

By the end of 8 weeks you'll have more than a finished garment...

✔️ Design a garment from scratch — a small mood board, a quick sketch, and a short written brief — before you buy a single thing

✔️ Take accurate measurements and choose the right pattern size for your body

✔️ Understand how fabric drape, weight, and structure can change what a pattern does when worn on your body

✔️ Make a shell (basic toile) to assess the fit and make adjustments before cutting your main fabric

✔️ Plan and follow a logical construction sequence

✔️ Press properly — and understand why it makes the difference between a garment that looks homemade and one that doesn't

✔️ Finish with a process you can repeat for every project after this one — not just a one-off make

What's included..?

Everything you need to complete your first garment!

Help With Deciding on Your Project

It can feel hard to know what you should make, and one of the first things I'll help you with is getting your idea from your head and onto paper.

A Sewing Construction guide

To help you plan your project for the best results, I'll include my sewing construction guide, so you know which order you should be creating your project.

Weekly Video Lessons

Guiding your through each week is a video lesson that you can watch in your own time and at your own pace.

PDF Downloads for Those who Prefer to Read

Not everyone likes to learn through video, so each weeks lesson will be broken down into a printable file that you can read on your device or print and refer to again and again.

Questions..

A few things that people ask...

Questions come up with every course I run, so here are the most commonly asked ones!

What if I am a Complete Beginner?

If you have never sewn before, then this course is not for you. It assumes that you have some knowledge of basic construction steps like seams and hems.

For complete beginners I recommend my Learn to Sew online course first.

Do I need a Sewing Machine?

You can work through this course without a sewing machine if you prefer a slow and enjoyable hand sewing experience.

But a home sewing machine with straight and zig zag stitch options would be better.

When does the course start?

This beta version of Design & Make your First Me-Made Garment starts on 18th May 2026.

People can enrol at any time after, but the beta pricing will disappear and the normal price will be £97.

How Much Time Does Each Week Take?

Earlier weeks in the course will need just 2-3 hours to work through and implement.

Later weeks will require more time, as we will be sewing a toile, making fit adjustments and constructing the final project.

There is no hurry though. You have lifetime access to the course.

Do I Need A Sewing Pattern?

This will depend on your decision in Week 2 and I can guide you on where to buy or download free sewing patterns to work with.

How long do I have access to the course?

You have access to the course materials for as long as it exists.

While I don't always have a course open to buy, those who have purchased will always have access to them.

The private community for the course will be active for as long as the course is active.
